Tourist Information

All Science Olympiad National Tournament events will be held on GW’s Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses. The two campuses are
both located in the northwest quadrant of Washington, approximately three miles from each other. Given the urban nature of GW’s
campuses and the availability of public transportation options, those teams arriving in Washington by passenger car or van or by charter or school bus are strongly advised to leave their vehicles parked for the duration of the Tournament and to utilize public transportation and/or walking to travel around the campuses and throughout the city.

  • Foggy Bottom Campus: University Parking Garage (2211 H Street, NW), the entrance to which is located on 22nd Street between H and I Streets.  Please note that there is a 6’5” maximum clearance at the University Parking Garage, which is not sufficient to accommodate vans; all vans should park at the Mount Vernon Campus (see below).  For the period of Thursday, May 29 through Sunday, May 31, there will be a special reduced rate available of $10 per exit, per day ($40 for vehicles that remain parked in the garage for the entire 4-day duration).   This reduced rate will only be available to those customers who present a Science Olympiad Foggy Bottom Campus parking coupon to the cashier upon exiting the Garage.  The Science Olympiad Foggy Bottom Campus parking coupons will be available at onsite Tournament registration and the Tournament Information Centers from Thursday, May 29 through Saturday, May 31.  For those who do not present a Science Olympiad parking coupon to the cashier upon exiting the Garage during the above-referenced period, or for those parked in the Garage outside of the above-referenced period, posted parking rates will apply.

  • Mount Vernon Campus: Mount Vernon Campus Parking Garage (2100 Foxhall Road, NW), the entrance to which is located just inside the Whitehaven Parkway entrance to the campus.  Please note that there is a maximum 6’9” clearance at the Mount Vernon Campus Parking Garage. For the period of Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30, there will be a special reduced rate available of $10 per exit, per day ($20 for vehicles that remain parked in the garage for the entire 2-day duration, as there is no cashier present on the weekends).  This reduced rate will only be available to those customers who pre-purchase a Science Olympiad Mount Vernon Campus parking pass at onsite Tournament registration on Thursday, May 29 or Friday, May 30.  For those who do not pre-purchase a a Science Olympiad Mount Vernon Campus parking pass during the above-referenced period, or for those parked in the Garage outside of the above-referenced period, posted parking rates will apply.

Parking for Passenger Cars with maximum 6’9” height AND ALL VANS:

  • Mount Vernon Campus Parking Garage as noted above. Please note that there is no parking on the Foggy Bottom Campus for vehicles above the height of 6’5”, so those with oversized vehicles up to 6'9" height should park at the Mount Vernon Campus and use “The Vern Express” shuttle service to travel between the campuses.

For more information about parking locations and rates, visit the Parking Services website.

Parking may also be available on the streets in and around the Foggy Bottom Campus, although do so at your own risk and be sure to review/obey all posted signs.  Visitors to GW may not park on the streets around the Mount Vernon Campus; those who do so are subject to fines and towing.

BY CHARTER/SCHOOL BUS

There is NO BUS PARKING available on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses.  As such, please plan accordingly for your bus to park elsewhere, preferably for your bus to be left outside the city throughout the duration of the National Tournament.  There is often bus parking available adjacent to the National Mall, alongside the Potomac River/E Street Expressway, or at Union Station, although these arrangements are the responsibility of individual teams.  For more information, visit the Motorcoach Guide to Washington.

Those teams staying in the Foggy Bottom Campus residence halls may have charter/school buses drop-off upon arrival for the National Tournament and pick-up upon departure from the National Tournament, but should be aware that the streets on the Foggy Bottom Campus are fairly narrow and that traffic conditions may make it difficult to stop a bus for any prolonged period of time.

Those teams staying in the Mount Vernon Campus residence halls may arrange to have charter/school buses drop-off upon arrival for the National Tournament and pick-up upon departure from the National Tournament by making advance arrangements with Mount Vernon Campus Life Event Services at 202-242-6673 or mvcl@gwu.edu. During the National Tournament, those teams staying in the Mount Vernon Campus residence halls should use "The Vern Express" shuttle service to travel between the campuses.

BY METRORAIL

The Foggy Bottom Campus is accessible via the Foggy Bottom-GWU station on Metrorail’s Blue and Orange lines. The station is located at 2301 I Street, NW, which is on the western edge of the Foggy Bottom Campus. Please be aware that Metrorail is open from 5am to Midnight on weekdays and from 7am to 3am on weekends. Please consider this carefully when planning your travel to and from the Foggy Bottom Campus via Metrorail. For additional information, visit the Metro website.

The Mount Vernon Campus is not directly accessible by Metrorail, but is connected to the Foggy Bottom Campus via “The Vern Express” shuttle service.

THE VERN EXPRESS, CONNECTING THE FOGGY BOTTOM AND MOUNT VERNON CAMPUSES

From Tuesday, May 27 through Tuesday, June 3, “The Vern Express” shuttle bus service will provide free, roundtrip transportation between the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses 24 hours a day. The one-way trip between the campuses takes approximately 10-13 minutes, although during heavy traffic conditions, especially on weekdays from 7 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., during rush hour, the one-way trip may take longer. Visit The Vern Express website for the schedule and complete details.

BY AIR

The Washington, DC metropolitan area is served by three major airports:

:: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, located approx. 15 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. with direct access to Metrorail's Blue and Yellow lines
:: Washington Dulles International Airport, located about 45 minutes west of Washington, D.C.
:: Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, located about 1 hour north of Washington, D.C.

While neither Dulles nor Baltimore/Washington airports offer direct access to Metrorail, they are well served by other forms of public and charter transportation and may offer wider and less expensive flight options than Reagan National airport. Visit the above-referenced airport websites for additional information.

Residence Halls

Residence Hall Check-in

Residence hall rooms for 2008 Science Olympiad National Tournament participants will be available on GW's Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses. Rooms will be available for Thursday, May 29, through Sunday, June 1, with the possibility of arrivals as early as Tuesday, May 27, and departures as late as Tuesday, June 3, on a space-available basis with requests made as part of tournament registration, as noted below. The rooms will be available at $25 per bed per night for shared occupancy or $45 per bed per night for single occupancy.

All residence halls are air-conditioned and linens, blankets, pillows, and towels are included in the cost of staying in the residence halls. Most residence halls provide two, three, or four beds per room and feature private bathrooms in each room or suite; when bathrooms are shared, they are designated for a single gender. Please note that GW Housing Programs will make specific campus and hall assignments in order to best maximize the available residence hall beds; requests for specific assignments will not be honored. In order to provide equal space for all teams that may wish to stay in the residence halls, we will be initially allocating 17 beds to each team. However, the online registration process for teams, as noted below, will enable teams to request additional beds on a space-available basis (largely as a result of other teams not using some/all of their allotted beds). While we will make an attempt to honor requests for additional beds, please realize that space is limited and teams should therefore prepare accordingly with accommodations beyond the residence halls (ie. hotel rooms). Additionally, all participants staying in the residence halls will need to use the beds provided; use of sleeping bags and/or sleeping on the floor to increase room capacities will not be permitted.

The request for residence hall rooms is included as part of the online registration process for the National Tournament, which also enable team head coaches to pre-purchase Tournament meals and merchandise among other functions. For additional information, see Registration Information.
