Internet Access During the National Tournament

Internet access for Science Olympiad National Tournament participants is expected to be available on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon campuses as follows. Participants may wish to print this page prior to traveling to campus, such that these instructions are readily accessible when seeking internet access.

WIRED INTERNET (computer labs)

The following computer labs should be available to National Tournament participants, on a space-available basis:

  • Foggy Bottom Campus: Marvin Center Ground Floor Computer Lab (Room G04)
  • Mount Vernon Campus: Eckles Library 24 Hour Computer Lab (Room 113)

Both computer labs offer multiple web browsers and several Microsoft Office programs.  These labs require the use of a “G1” account to login to the computers.  The G1 account for all National Tournament participants is:

  • Login: olympiad-08
  • Password: science

Please note: there are no other wired internet connections available on campus for National Tournament participants, whether for their own computers or in other computer labs.

WIRELESS INTERNET

(for those with their own laptop computers equipped with 802.11b or higher wireless network cards)

The “gw_event” wireless network should be available in the following locations that may be accessible to National Tournament participants, noting that residence halls are restricted to those staying in the specific building.  Availability of a connection at any given time is subject to network conditions and the number of users connected:

  • Foggy Bottom Campus: 1957 E Street (6th floor); Academic Center (1st floor); Crawford Hall (1st floor lobby lounge); Hall of Government (all floors); Lisner Auditorium (entire space); Madison Hall (basement lounge); Marvin Center (1st-4th floors); Media and Public Affairs Building (1st floor); Monroe Hall (all floors)
  • Mount Vernon Campus: Ames Building (Ames Dining Room, G-Dub Java Lounge, and The Pub); Clark Hall (all floors); Cole Hall (all floors); Eckles Library (all floors); Hensley Hall (all floors); Merriweather Hall (all floors); Somers Hall (all floors); The Quad (entire space)

To utilize the “gw_event” wireless network in any of the above-noted locations, confirm that the network is visible to your computer, establish a connection to the network, and then open a web browser.  If the web browser opens to a page outside the GW domain (ie. other than www.gwu.edu), you should be redirected to a page that requests a username and password, which is the same for all National Tournament participants:

  • Username: olympiad-08
  • Password: science

If you have entered the above username and password correctly, you should be redirected to a page that confirms that you are now connected to the “gw_event” wireless network.  This confirmation page does not need to remain open to maintain wireless network access, but you may be redirected to the login page once every 24 hours to re-enter the username and password.

Please note: the “gwireless” wireless network may also be visible to your computer, but is only available to GW students, faculty, and staff with a GW NetID and password.
